31st Pacific Northwest Men’s Senior Team Championship Kicks Off at Sunriver Resort

Sunriver Resort in Central Oregon is hosting the 31st Pacific Northwest Men’s Senior Team Championship this week. The championship, conducted by the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA), is being contested by some of the region’s top senior amateur players over three days and held on the resort’s Meadows and Woodlands courses.

Returning this year to defend their title is the team of Paul Houvener of Mill Creek, Wash. and Rob Matson of Wenatchee, Wash., who won last year’s championship going away, leading the field by an impressive six strokes after two rounds and cruising to a seven stroke victory over second-place finishers Larry Gilhuly and Jim McNelis, both of Gig Harbor, Wash. and John Gallacher of Burnaby, B.C. and Gundmund Lindbjerg of Port Moody, B.C.

Also in the field is the team of Steve Berry of Vancouver, B.C. and Lance MacGregor of Delta, B.C., who won this championship in 2011 and tied for fifth last year. Berry is a member of the Golf Hall of Fame of BC.

Also in the field are past champions Al Reinikka of Bellingham, Wash. and Bill Roland of Spring Hill, Fla., who won this title in 1997.

Players will be coming from all parts of the region – Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California, British Columbia and Alberta, as well as other parts of the U.S.

The championship will consist of 54 holes of stroke play, with two-person teams competing in gross and net divisions. Play will be contested on two courses at Sunriver Resort, one round on the Woodlands Course and two rounds on the Meadows Course, using a different format on each day – Four-Ball, Chapman, and Four-Ball.

Entrants into this championship must be 50 years of age or older by September 18, 2013. The Pacific Northwest Men’s Senior Team Championship is one of 16 regional championships conducted annually by the PNGA.
