Adam Hadwin the latest to join the ‘Mr. 59’ club

Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, B.C. fired a 13-under par 59 in the third round of the PGA TOUR’s CareerBuilder Challenge, which vaulted him into the lead going into the final round at La Quinta CC in Southern California.
He is the eighth tour player to join the “Mr. 59” club. He couldn’t hold on to the lead, finishing a single shot behind winner Hudson Swafford, but his second-place finish is the best of his young PGA TOUR career, and he’s set himself up well as the 2017 season gets into full swing.

Below are select quotes from Hadwin following his runner-up finish at the CareerBuilder Challenge.

Q: Overall, what was the week like for you, given the 59 yesterday and the chance to win down the stretch today?

A: It was just kind of an average week until yesterday, really. To go out and do what I did and put myself in the position to win a golf tournament and to be right there coming up the last with a chance to win still, it just sets up the year and puts a lot of pressure off the rest of the year now. Today, mixed with a good fall, it’s just a lot of positive momentum moving forward and confidence that I can compete out here.

Q: There was a lot of support for you this week in the galleries. Does this almost feel like a home event for you, with so many Canadians living in the desert and coming out to support you?

A: I played well last year and got myself in the final group and had a chance to win going into the back nine. Somebody told me at the end of the day that I had the second loudest cheer going off the first hole besides Mickelson.

So, they come out in full support for all of us Canadians. There’s a lot of them down here. To be able to play well in front of family and friends and lots of people that I know was pretty exciting.

Q: You have some history in the desert too, with your first pro win coming at the 2010 Desert Dunes Classic on the Mackenzie Tour – PGA TOUR Canada. How did that, along with the rest of your time on that Tour, help prepare you for experiences like this week?

A: The Mackenzie Tour was great. It really prepares you for, if nothing else, the travel of professional golf. You’re going city-to-city, hotel-to-hotel and course-to-course. The way they run it is very professional. The way I describe it is, it’s the PGA TOUR on a smaller scale. They do everything the same and you really feel like you’re at a good professional event.

Q: You represented Canada a few weeks ago when you played in the World Cup with David Hearn. What was that experience like, playing for your country?

A: The World Cup was fantastic. I wasn’t really sure what to expect going down there and playing team golf. It was fun; alternate shot’s a completely different animal, and you’d think playing best ball would be easy, but even that’s a little bit different and it took us a couple of days to get used to it. We had a ton of fun being able to play in a different country and represent Canada.
