Burkey and Smego Lead After First Round at PNGA Women’s Senior Team
The duo of Ginny Burkey and Lisa Smego grabbed the first round lead at the PNGA Women’s Senior Team Championship, being held this week at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton Wash. The duo is looking for a three-peat, having won this championship the past two years.
Burkey, of Eugene, Ore., and Smego of Oro Valley, Ariz., combined for a 2-under par 69, playing in the championship’s Four-Ball format.
Sitting in second place, just one shot behind the leaders, is the team of Jackie Little of Port Alberni, B.C. and Kathryn McGarvey of North Vancouver, B.C. Little is a 2009 inductee into the Golf Hall of Fame of BC.
Smego won in 2012 with Karen Brannon as her teammate while Burkey won four consecutive times from 2008-2011 with Loree McKay as her teammate. The 2015 victory gave Burkey her sixth PNGA Women’s Senior Team Championship title, giving her for the most wins in this event (Pat Harrop-Schumacher of Sequim, Wash. has five).
The championship’s second round will be conducted in the Chapman format, with the third and final round being held in the Four-Ball format.
