Burkey, Smego Open Up Big Lead at PNGA Women’s Senior Team

Ginny Burkey of Eugene, Ore. and Lisa Smego of Olympia, Wash. opened up a big lead after the second round at the Pacific Northwest Women’s Senior Team Championship. The 33rd playing of the Championship is being contested at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore.

Today’s second round was played in the Chapman format and held at the resort’s Meadows Course.

Burkey and Smego finished round two at one-under-par 70, carding two birdies, one bogey, and 15 pars. They are six-under-par total and hold a 14-shot lead with only tomorrow’s final round remaining.

Burkey and Smego are attempting to record their second consecutive victory in this event. They enjoyed a 16-stroke victory last year at Sunriver when they were playing as a team for the first time. Smego won in 2012 with Karen Brannon as her teammate while Burkey won four consecutive times from 2008-2011 with Loree McKay as her teammate.

Robin Cole of Ellensburg, Wash. and Kathryn McGarvey of North Vancouver, B.C. combined for a four-over-par 75 in the round-two Chapman to hold second place alone at eight-over-par total.

In third place are Nettie Morrison of Bend, Ore. and Barbara Gahr of Bend, Ore. at nine-over-par total, after a five-over-par 76 in round two. Carol Dick of Lakewood, Wash. and Mary O’Donnell of Bellevue, Wash. also head into round three at nine-over-par after their own round of five-over-par 76 in today’s Chapman format.

The third and final round of the 33rd PNGA Women’s Senior Team will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Meadows Course again. The final round will again be played in the four-ball format.
