Vaughn Crowned Champion at 55th PNGA Junior Girls’ Amateur Championship

Meridian, Idaho (August 12, 2010) – Medalist, Monica Vaughn of Reedsport, Ore. went wire-to-wire to win the 55th PNGA Junior Girls’ Amateur Championship at SpurWing Country Club in Meridian, Idaho.

Vaughn, the #1 seed and just a 15-year old was up against local favorite, Cali Hipp, a 17-year old from Caldwell, Idaho. Hipp won the first hole with a par and it was the first time all week that Vaughn has trailed in a match; however it was not for long as she calmly rolled in a 25-foot eagle putt on the 456-yard 2nd hole to better Hipp’s birdie and square the match. Both players halved the 3rd hole with pars and the 4th hole with birdies, before Vaughn took control of the match with birdies on the 5th, 7th and a chip in birdie on the 9th to take a 3-up advantage at the turn.

On the back-9 both players halved the 10th, 11th, and 12th holes with pars, the 13th hole with birdies, the 14th hole with double-bogeys, and the 15th hole with bogeys to maintaining Vaughn’s 3-up advantage with just three holes to play. On the 475-yard, par-5 16th hole both players again halved with pars, sealing the 3&2 victory for Vaughn.

Vaughn added Medalist and Champion honors at the PNGA Junior Girls’ Amateur Championship to her already amazing record this summer which includes winning the Oregon Women’s Public Links, Oregon Women’s Amateur, Oregon Junior Amateur, finishing T2 at the Oregon Women’s Stroke Play, and T3 at the Girls’ Junior Americas Cup.

The championship consisted of 18-holes of stroke play qualifying that determined flights for the match play portion of the championship. The lowest 16 scorers from the qualifying round advanced to the Championship Flight, with each of the remaining flights being comprised of eight contestants. All matches are 18-holes and played at scratch (no handicaps). Contestants that lost their first round matches today will form consolation flights.
