Former champion Don Scott passes
Don Scott passed away on December 17, 2016, from complications of a severe car accident suffered in September. He was 69.
Don was the general manager and superintendent at Grays Harbor Country Club in Aberdeen, Wash. for 41 years, retiring in April 2015.
A significant player as a young man, Don won back-to-back Washington State Amateur Championship titles, in 1968 and ’69, and was the runner-up in the 1967 PNGA Men’s Amateur, losing in the final match to Donny Power at Seattle’s Broadmoor Golf Club. He played one year (1968) on the men’s golf team at the University of Houston, which was a powerhouse for many years during that era, winning several NCAA national team titles. Don was also selected to compete in the inaugural Pacific Coast Amateur, held in 1967 at Seattle Golf Club, finishing tied for 14th.
Playing alongside his brother Dan Scott, Don won two high school state championship team titles (1963 and ’64) for Seattle’s Shoreline High School.
