Laschuk Holds Lead After Round One at PNGA Senior Women’s Amateur; Ryan on Top at Super Senior

Phyllis Laschuck of Vancouver, B.C. shot even-par 72 to take the first round lead at the 30th Pacific Northwest Senior Women’s Amateur; while Mary Ryan of Renton, Wash. has taken the first round lead in the 5th Pacific Northwest Super Senior Women’s Amateur.

The 36-hole stroke-play championships are being held concurrently at Arrowhead Golf Club in Molalla, Ore. and are being conducted by the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA).

With birdies on holes 15 and 16, Laschuk was putting together a terrific round, and despite a bogey on the par-5 18th, she still holds a two-stroke lead over Sandra Turbide of Maple Ridge, B.C., who had two bogeys on the back nine to finish the day at 2-over par.

The crowded leaderboard includes Anita Wicks of Roseburg, Ore. at 3-over par. Wicks had finished runner-up last year after losing in a playoff.

Defending champion Leilani Norman of Eugene, Ore. sits at 7-over part, seven shots back of Laschuk.

In the Super Senior championship, Ryan shot a 7-over par 79 and holds a slim one-shot lead over Diane Law of Kenmore, Wash. and Cindy Anderson of Eugene. Last month Ryan won (with partner Sun Douthit) the Pacific Northwest Women’s Super Senior Team Championship, and is looking to finish out the year strong.

To be eligible, competitors in the Senior Women’s Amateur must be 50 years of age or older by the first day of competition, while Super Senior competitors must be 65 years of age or older.
