PNGA Player of the Year Gigi Stoll wins Portland Classic Amateur Open

University of Arizona senior and Tigard, Ore. native Gigi Stoll won the Portland Classic Amateur Open, earning the opportunity to compete against LPGA professionals with a spot in the Cambia Portland Classic. Stoll turned in a 5-under-par round of 67 at Columbia Edgewater Country Club in Portland to capture the title.

This is the third time Stoll has won the Amateur Open, previously winning in 2014 and 2015. Stoll still holds the tournament record when she carded a 9-under-par 63 at Langdon Farms Golf Club during the 2015 Portland Classic Amateur Open.

Earlier this summer, Stoll captured the 117th Pacific Northwest Women’s Amateur Championship conducted by the PNGA. Stoll has been named PNGA Women’s Player of the Year three times (2014, 2015, 2017) and has also won the Oregon Women’s Amateur three times (2014, 2015, 2017). Stoll is looking to continue her success at Columbia Edgewater Country Club when the Cambia Portland Open is held there Aug 30-Sept 2.

Stoll finished four strokes ahead of Olivia Benzin of Oregon State University who carded a 1-under-par 71. Benzin earned herself an opportunity to play in the Portland Classic’s Monday LPGA qualifying round, along with Sarah Rhee from the University of Washington who carded an even-par 72 and Nicole Schroder from Oregon State University who carded a 1-over-par 73.

The tournament’s professional qualifying round will be held on Monday, August 27.

The 72-hole event proper features the top women professional golfers from around the world, competing for a purse of $1.3 million. All four rounds of the Portland Classic will be broadcast to over 170 countries on Golf Channel.

Now in its 47th year, the Portland Classic is the longest-running non-major event on the LPGA Tour.

Tournament Golf Foundation (TGF) is a local Portland area non-profit group of more than 50 volunteers who contribute their time and provide the primary operations for the annual event.
