PNGA Player of the Year Gigi Stoll leads Arizona to women’s NCAA title

STILLWATER, OKLA. – Gigi Stoll (Tigard, Ore.) and her teammates on the University of Arizona Women’s Golf Team won the NCAA Women’s Division I National Championship on Wednesday.

Stoll was a quarterfinalist at the 2017 PNGA Women’s Amateur

The championship, starting on May 19th at Karsten Creek Golf Club with stroke play, concluded on the 23rd with with two days of match play, featuring the top-8 teams from the stroke play portion of the event. Arizona, the No. 8 seed in match play, faced off against the University of Alabama, the No. 2 seed.

Stoll, a junior, won her quarterfinal and semifinal matches on Tuesday. Against top-seeded UCLA, she defeated junior Lilia Vu 2-up, who had been named the Women’s Golf Coaches Association Player of the Year the same day. Against Stanford in the semifinals, Stoll won her match 5&3 against sophomore Ziyi Wang, who recently finished fourth at the 2018 Pac-12 Championships and finished second at last year’s California Women’s Amateur Championship.

Against Alabama, Stoll played against Kristen Gillman, currently the No. 10 ranked women’s amateur golfer in the world and 2014 U.S. Women’s Amateur champion. Stoll fell 4&3 against Gillman, but the Wildcats finished with three total points out of five matches, earning their third national championship and first since 2000. Haley Moore, who Stoll played with at this year’s U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball earlier this month, won in a playoff to secure the winning point for Arizona.

Stoll was named the PNGA Women’s Player of the Year in 2014, 2015 and 2017, and PNGA Junior Girls’ Player of the Year in 2013. Stoll has won three Oregon Women’s Amateur titles (2014, 2015, 2017), including last year’s. The former Beaverton High School standout also has earned three Oregon Junior Amateur wins (2011, 2013, 2014) and won the 2015 Oregon Women’s Stroke Play Championship.
