PNGA Senior & Super Senior Women’s Amateur Championships Begin at Everett G&CC

The Pacific Northwest Senior Women’s Amateur and Super Senior Women’s Amateur Championships are being held concurrently at Everett (Wash.) Golf & Country Club on October 5-6. The championships consist of 36 holes of stroke play with players competing for gross and net prizes. Both rounds will begin with shotgun starts at 9:00 a.m. The championships are being conducted by the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA).

Last year’s Pacific Northwest Senior Women’s Amateur Championship saw Melanie Grant of Kelowna, B.C. win after shooting a final round 73 to finish two stokes better than Gretchen Klein of Hoquiam, Wash. and Leilani Norman of Eugene, Ore.

Sue Hubbard of Kent, Wash. won the Super Senior Women’s Amateur Championship by one stroke over Pacific Northwest Golf Hall of Fame Inductee, Ann Swanson of Bellevue, Wash.

Notable names participating in the Senior Women’s this year are Alison Murdoch of Victoria, B.C., member of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame, Pacific Northwest Golf Hall of Fame, Golf Hall of Fame of BC and five-time PNGA Senior Women’s Player of Year, who won the PNGA Senior Women’s in 2005 and 2011; Ginny Burkey of Eugene, Ore. who last week qualified for the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur and made it to the Round of 32 before being eliminated in extra holes, and also won the Washington State Senior Women’s Amateur Championship earlier this summer; Grant looking to defend her title as PNGA Senior Women’s champion this year; Jackie Little of Port Alberni, B.C. who won the PNGA Senior Women’s in 2008 and 2009; Denise Kieffer of University Place, Wash., who was honored as the WSGA Senior Women’s Player of the Year in 2014; and Leilani Norman of Eugene, Ore. who also qualified for the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur this year.

Those to watch for in the Super Senior Amateur include Swanson who, along with being a member of the Pacific Northwest Golf Hall of Fame, won the Senior Women’s in 2000. Hubbard looks to repeat as the Super Senior Women’s champion this year.

To be eligible, competitors in the Senior Women’s Amateur must be 50 years of age or older by the first day of competition, while Super Senior competitors must be 65 years of age or older.

The Senior Amateur will be played as a 5,561-yard par 72. The Super Senior Amateur will also be a par 72, with a yardage of 5,190.

Everett Golf & Country Club was founded in 1910. The club’s first professional was Tom Morris, whom many believe to be the nephew of golf legend, Old Tom Morris of St. Andrews. The course has towering Douglas firs that line the fairways, and difficult green complexes that run smooth and fast.
