PNGA Senior & Super Senior Women’s Amateur Championships Held This Week at Overlake G&CC
The 31st Pacific Northwest Senior Women’s Amateur and 6th Super Senior Women’s Amateur Championships are being held concurrently at Overlake Golf and Country Club in Medina, Wash. on October 2-3.
The championships consist of 36 holes of stroke play, and are being conducted by the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA).
Last year’s Senior Women’s Amateur Championship saw Anita Wicks of Roseburg, Ore. pull out a narrow one-shot victory over second-place finisher Phyllis Laschuk of Vancouver, B.C. Wicks had lost out in a three-way playoff the previous. She is in the field again this year to try to defend her title. Laschuk is also in the field.
Other competitors to watch out for are Leilani Norman of Eugene, Ore., who won this title in 2015; Leslie Folsom of Tukwila, Wash., who last week competed in her ninth consecutive USGA Women’s State Team Championship; Alison Murdoch of Victoria, B.C., who has won this title twice (2011, 2005) and was inducted into the Pacific Northwest Golf Hall of Fame in 2013.
Among those to watch for in the Super Senior Women’s Amateur is Mary Ryan of Renton, Wash., who last year won the title when it was held at Arrowhead Golf Club in Molalla, Ore. Ryan is in the field again this year to try to defend her title. Last month Ryan won (with partner Sun Douthit) the Pacific Northwest Women’s Super Senior Team Championship for the second consecutive year.
To be eligible, competitors in the Senior Women’s Amateur must be 50 years of age or older by the first day of competition, while Super Senior competitors must be 65 years of age or older.
