At Tetherow Golf Club in Bend, Oregon, it’s a reasonable aspiration. Tetherow has been in every biennial iteration since 2011 of the Golf Digest “Top 100 U.S. Public Golf Courses.” Chris van der Velde doesn’t take it for granted. The question every year, he said, for a “world-renowned architect and a journeyman tour player” – course designer David McLay Kidd and himself, the general manager/managing partner – is how to enhance play, how to make Tetherow playable for everyone. It doesn’t mean reducing the challenge or dumbing it down. It might mean offering more help in certain places for a mid-to-high handicapper while not, van der Velde said, “making it easier for a plus-3 to shoot 65.” Off the course, Tetherow is thriving. The resort, with a 50-room hotel, 2-bedroom and 5-bedroom vacation rentals, and a state-of-the- art fitness facility, has been named the best resort in Oregon by Conde Nast Traveler 2018 Readers’ Choice Awards. “Many of our guests come from all over,” says Jake Edwards, PGA Director of Golf at Tetherow. “Tetherow has certainly put its stamp on the golf world. We give guests the ‘Member Experience,’ and offer phenomenal service with a unique links/heathland golf experience.” Guests can also attend the Tetherow Golf Academy, which has a full staff offering private lessons and group clinics, TrackMan 4 launch monitors coupled with TruGolf E6 indoor golf simulator, and world-class custom TaylorMade club fitting. With direct and connecting flights in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Salt Lake, Denver and Seattle, taking golfers into the Redmond, Ore. airport, Tetherow is a perfect bucket list golf destination. Edwards had started at Tetherow as an assistant when it opened in 2008, after which he spent eight years at the world-renowned Vintage Club in Indian Wells, Calif. He returned in 2016 as Tetherow’s PGA Head Professional. “The opportunity to return home and run one of the finest golf courses in the Northwest was a true blessing to me and my family,” Edwards says. Kidd said all signs of residential construction are long gone. He calls it a “good vibe club.” Kidd, who designed Bandon Dunes, the original course at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, and Gamble Sands in Brewster, Wash. (another Golf Digest Top 100 public course), and counts the Castle Course in his native Scotland on his international portfolio, makes his home, these days, in Bend. “Because I live here, Chris and I make little tweaks every year,” Kidd said. It’s all in the name of “resistance to scoring,” as van der Velde puts it, which he says is third of
