b'Shelly Stouffer and Lara Tennant match highlights PNGA Lamey CupBY BRAD ZIEMERT o say Shelly Stouffer was looking forward to her singles match with Oregons Lara Tennant at the PNGA Lamey Cup would be something of an understatement. It was a match Stouffer had wanted since learning she would be a part of Team British Columbia at the 15th playing of the Lamey Cup, held May 4-5 at Bellingham (Wash.) Golf and Country Club.On Thursday, Stouffer got her wish and delivered in a big way, defeating Tennant 4 and 3 in the singles portion of the competition, played in cool, wet conditions.Shes the three-time reigning U.S. Senior Womens Amateur champion, Stouffer said after her win. Why wouldnt you want to play her? Lara Tennant has won three consecutive U.S. Senior Womens Amateur titles. Along with her three titles in the U.S. Senior Womens Amateur, Tennant had also been named the PNGA Senior Womens Player of the Year for four consecutive years, and earlier this spring had been inducted into the Pacific Northwest Golf Hall of Fame. The two titans had almost met late last summer when Stouffer made it all the way to the semifinals of the U.S. Senior Womens Amateur in Alabama. Had Stouffer made it to the final match of that championship, it would have been an all-Northwest final, with her and Tennant squaring off for the trophy. Instead, Tennant defeated Ellen Port 2 and 1 in the final to win her third consecutive national title. Stouffer had lobbied B.C. team captain (and BC Golf President) Greg Moody to get the match against Tennant. Had I made it past the semifinal down there in Alabama last summer I would have played her in the final, Stouffer said. It was just an opportunity you dont want to pass up. I guess its kind of like Mike Weir playing Tiger Woods.Stouffer, a Nanoose Bay resident and reigning B.C. and Canadian Senior Womens champion, birdied the firstShelly Stouffer is the reigning BC Senior Womens Amateur and Canadian Senior hole of the match and never looked back.
