Wang cruises through first two matches at PNGA Women’s Amateur; no upsets in Mid-Am bracket; quarterfinals and semifinals held tomorrow

Ziyi Wang, the No. 1 seed entering match-play at the 116th Pacific Northwest Women’s Amateur, easily handled her first two matches today, 7 and 6 over Coral Schulz and 3 and 2 over Bree Wanderscheid, to advance to tomorrow’s quarterfinal match.

Wang, a rising sophomore at Stanford University, will face Naomi Ko of Victoria, B.C. in the quarterfinals. The two will tee off at 7:30 a.m.

Ko finished runner-up in last year’s championship, and is looking to finish the task this year. She was named the PNGA Women’s Player of the Year in 2016.

Also advancing to tomorrow’s quarterfinals is Julianne Alvarez, the reigning Washington State Women’s Amateur champion and rising junior at the University of Washington. In tomorrow’s quarterfinals she will face Gigi Stoll of Tigard, Ore., the reigning Oregon Amateur champion. The two will tee off at 7:39 a.m. tomorrow.

There were no surprises in the Women’s Mid-Amateur Round of 16 matches, as all top eight seeds of the 16-seed championship bracket advanced to tomorrow’s quarterfinal matches.

Christina Proteau of Port Alberni, B.C. is the No. 1 seed, and she easily handled her Round of 16 match against Jane Harris of Tukwila, Wash., 5 and 3. In tomorrow’s quarterfinal match Proteau will face Leilani Norman of Eugene, Ore., who was the 2015 PNGA Senior Women’s Player of the Year. The two will tee off at 8:15 a.m. Proteau is a three-time PNGA Women’s Mid-Amateur Player of the Year.

Also making it through today’s matches in the Mid-Amateur were Amanda Jacobs of Portland and Sandra Turbide of Maple Ridge, B.C. The two past champions will face each other tomorrow morning in the quarterfinal match.

Each match in the single-elimination bracket is conducted over 18 holes, with the exception of the Women’s Amateur final match, which will be contested over 36 holes on Friday, July 21. The Women’s Mid-Amateur 18-hole final match will also be held on July 21.

Both the Women’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur will hold their quarterfinal matches tomorrow morning, with the semifinal matches being held tomorrow afternoon.

Both championships are being held concurrently this week on the par-71 Fairwood Golf and Country Club in Renton, Wash. and conducted by the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA).
