b'GOLF OREGONLake Oswego Muni gets much-needed makeover by Josh GauntO ver the years the Lake Oswego Municipal Golf Course, which was an 18-hole par-3 layout, reached a point where drainage, over-shading, and simply being a par-3 course, required it to be renovated. The course was built in the late 1960s and each fairway was planted with trees along the edges to separate it from the other fairways. But over time the trees matured and created a course that remained shaded most of the day and interrupted airflow leading to soggy and poor turf conditions. It was built as an 18-hole par-3 course which limited its audience and marketability, so the course has been subsidized since the late 2000s, LakeThe course was stripped, to erase the 18 par-3 holes and create a 9-hole executive course. Oswego Parks & Recreation Director Ivan Anderholm said. But then the courses popularity increased during the pandemic, nearly reaching the same level of play as its peak in the early 2000s.The city of Lake Oswego decided to renovate the course in 2020, although they had been looking at how to make the golf course sustainable for the city since 2015. The former clubhouse is being renovated and will be a part of the new Lake Oswego Recreation and Aquatics Center, which is being built on the property where some of the former holes were located. It will be used for programming, classes, and rentals. Golf course operations and reservations will be located in the new Recreation and Aquatics Center, scheduled to open in late 2024. The new Recreation and Aquatics Center will also house the renovated golf courses clubhouse and reservations operations. 12 GOLF OREGON|MAR 2024'
