b'GOLF ALASKARob Nelson takes Alaska State Senior Amateur On the northeast side of Anchorage lies the northernmost 36-hole course in America. Moose Run, situated on Fort Richardson military base, frequently plays host to some of Alaskas most challenging tournaments. The Hill course, built first, followed with its younger but more temperamental brother, the Creek course, played host to two of Alaska Golf Associations state championships this year. Rob Nelson ended the third round of the 2025 Alaska State Senior Amateur the same way he ended the first, atop the leaderboard, going wire-to-wire to claim the title, with rounds of 74-72-73. After a lengthy professional career that featured stops on the Canadian Tour and various mini tours throughout the U.S., Nelson moved to Alaska to become a teaching and management professional at the now-defunct Eagle Glen Golf Course on Elmendorf Air Force Base located just down the highway from Fort Richardson. After having his amateur status re-instated a few years ago, Nelson has found success playing in Alaska amateur events. Sarah Limesand won the Senior Womens event over Elaine Kim. Mindy Stefanski completed her Amateur title in the Super Senior Womens Division, and Benji Sumulong also claimed the title in the Super Senior Mens Division. The Creek course, known for its tree-lined fairways and unforgiving bounces, plays as the most challenging golf course in South-Central Alaska. At 7,324 yards from the back tees, it also carries an impressive 75.7 course rating with 141 slope.Over 70 golfers participated in this years Senior Championship, proof that summer golf in Alaska showcases not only beautiful scenery but golfers from a wide variety of age ranges. Many of Alaskas golfers retreat to warmer destinations during the winter, but the allure of the midnight sun continues to bring people back to enjoy a multitude of activities such as fishing, flying, hiking, and of course golf almost 24 hours a day.Sam Olson, AGA Board Member AGA Board Member Rich Teders (left) and Rob Nelson.
