Moon Wins 54th Junior Girls’ Amateur Championship

Renton, Wash. (August 20, 2009) – Medalist Seo Hee Moon of Mukilteo, Wash. went wire to wire to win the 54th PNGA Junior Girls’ Amateur Championship hosted by Fairwood Golf and Country Club.

17 year old, #1 seed Moon matched up against 14 year old and #14 seed Sierra Bezdicek of Colbert, Wash. in this mornings championship match. Moon started off the day with par-birdie to take the early 2-up lead and then halved holes 3 and 4 with bogeys before losing her only hole of the day to a Bezdicek birdie on the par-4 6th hole. Moon then got hot as she has done all week and finished the front nine with birdie-birdie-par, winning all three holes and taking a 4-up lead to the back nine. Both players made a rare double-bogey on the par-5 10th hole but Moon was quick to bounce back with a birdie on the par-4 11th to take a commanding 5-up lead. Both players made pars on holes 13 and 14 to put Moon dormie in the match and a Bezdicek par on the 15th hole wasn’t enough as Moon matched her and closed out the championship with a 5&4 win.

17 year old Moon is no stranger to this championship and will go out on top; in her last four years she has collected 2 runner-up finishes (2006, 2007) was stroke play qualifying medalist (2009) and now has captured the title of 54th PNGA Junior Girls’ Amateur Champion.

The championship consisted of 18-holes of stroke play qualifying that determined flights for the match play portion of the championship. The lowest 16 scorers from the qualifying round advanced to the Championship Flight, with each of the remaining flights being comprised of eight contestants. All matches are 18-holes and played at scratch (no handicaps). Contestants that lost their first round matches formed consolation flights.

In all, a full field of 72 junior girls under the age of 18 competed at this year’s championship. To be eligible for the Pacific Northwest Junior Girls’ Amateur Championship, contestants must not have reached their 18th birthday by the final day of the competition and also must carry a handicap index of 40.4 or less.
