Burkey and Smego Take Big Lead into Final Round of 32nd PNGA Women’s Senior Team

The 32nd Pacific Northwest Women’s Senior Team Championship began on Monday, September 15th, and will run through Wednesday, September 17th at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore. The championship is conducted by the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA).

The championship will consist of 54 holes of stroke play, with two-person teams competing in gross and net divisions. Play will be contested on two courses at Sunriver Resort, Round One was played on the Woodlands Course and Rounds Two and Three on the Meadows Course, using a different format on each day – Four-Ball, Chapman, and Four-Ball.

The headlining duo this year is Ginny Burkey of Fircrest, Wash. and Lisa Smego of Olympia, Wash. The two are competing in this event together for the first time, but have a combined total of five wins in the Championship. Burkey won playing with Loree McKay of Portland, Ore. in four consecutive years from 2008, to 2011. Smego won with Karen Brannon of Redmond, Wash., in 2012.

In Round One, Four-Ball format was played at the Woodlands Course. Smego and Burkey got out to an early lead, carding a two-under-par 70. They continued that level of play today at the Meadows Course, where they shot a one-under-par 70 in the Chapman format. They are three under par total, and take a nine-stroke lead into Wednesday’s Final Round.

After Round Two, defending Champions Jackie Nelson of Hillsboro, Ore., and Mary Sias of Portland, Ore., stand in second place at six-over-par. They improved greatly in today’s Chapman format, carding a one-over-par 72, after shooting five-over-par in Round One.

Entrants into this championship must be 50 years of age or older by September 15, 2014.
