Foushee and Ziegler fall in Quarterfinals at U.S. Amateur Four-Ball

Carrying the mantle for the Northwest players in the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball national championship, held this week at Plainfield Country Club in Edison, N.J., Zach Foushee of Lake Oswego, Ore. and Robbie Ziegler of Tualatin, Ore. played well in their first two matches, but were not able to keep the momentum going in the match-play bracket.

After earning the No. 4 seed in the stroke-play rounds, they made it to the quarterfinals before falling 2 and 1 to the No. 28 seed side of Charlie Forster of England and Steen Zeman of Oxnard, Calif.

Foushee and Ziegler handily won their round of 32 match yesterday, 7 and 5. In this morning’s round of 16 match, they defeated Bence Bertenyi and Bence Kotel, both of Hungary, 4 and 3. But in this afternoon’s quarterfinal match, they never led, losing the fifth hole, and were three down after 15 holes, and had their backs against the wall.

Last year, Foushee and Ziegler earned medalist honors in this championship, carrying the No. 1 seed into the match-play bracket, but they lost in the round of 16.

Foushee and Ziegler have carved their names in the Northwest golf scene the past few years, with Foushee being named the PNGA Mid-Amateur Player of the Year in 2023 and Ziegler earning that honor in 2021. Both players were selected to compete on the victorious Team OGA in the PNGA Lamey Cup, held at Oswego Lake Country Club earlier this month.

Other Northwest players to make match play in this national championship were the side of Mitchell Baldridge of Fircrest, Wash. and Dalton Conn of Seattle. They were the No. 7 seed in the bracket, but lost their round of 16 match, 2-up, against Kush Arora of Pleasonton, Calif. and Edan Cui of Stanford, Calif.
