High-profile championships coming to the Northwest

Our little corner of the golf universe will be busy this season, hosting a number of national and high-profile championships. And if you want to get a little more involved, visit their respective websites for volunteer opportunities.

Jordan Spieth won the 2011 U.S. Junior Amateur, held that year at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash. His caddie at the championship was local elementary schoolteacher Michael Greller – it was the first time Greller had been on Spieth’s bag. Spieth of course is now in the middle of a stellar PGA TOUR career, winning three majors (so far) including the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash. Greller, of Gig Harbor, Wash., gave up his day job as a teacher, and remains Spieth’s caddie on tour to this day. (Photo by TJC)

At the end of the day, there was no doubt Nick Taylor had won the 2007 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship. Taylor would go on to star on the University of Washington men’s golf team, and was twice named the PNGA Men’s Player of the Year (in 2008 and 2009). Anne Sander won the U.S. Women’s Amateur three times (1958, 1961, 1963). A native of Seattle, she was inducted into the Pacific Northwest Golf Hall of Fame in 1999.
