Leisure Hour Golf Club: A pioneering legacy of community involvement
Founded in Portland in 1944 by Vernon Gaskin, Leisure Hour Golf Club stands as a testament to the resilience and passion of African American golfers in the Pacific Northwest. During an era of segregation and racial discrimination, Gaskin envisioned a club that would offer a welcoming environment for African American golfers who were often denied access to many of the region’s courses and tournaments.
Leisure Hour was established with the mission of providing African American golfers with a space where they could play, compete, and develop their skills. Gaskin’s vision quickly attracted a community of passionate golfers who were eager to participate in and promote the sport they loved. The club’s formation was a significant milestone, as it offered not only a venue for golf but also a social and cultural hub for the African American community.
In its early years, the club focused on building a strong membership base and organizing regular tournaments and events. These activities fostered a sense of camaraderie and competition among members, helping to hone their skills and foster a love for the game. The club’s events provided opportunities for its members to compete in a supportive environment, and many members began to excel in local and regional tournaments.

Over time, the club expanded its reach and influence. By participating in broader golfing events and establishing relationships with other clubs and organizations, Leisure Hour helped pave the way for future generations of African American golfers.
The club’s impact extends far beyond the fairways. Leisure Hour has been instrumental in promoting the values of fairness, sportsmanship, and community involvement. The club has actively worked to introduce young people to the game, offering clinics and youth programs designed to teach golf skills and life lessons. These initiatives have not only helped develop young golfers but also instilled in them the values of perseverance, discipline, and respect.
Leisure Hour’s commitment to community service is evident in its various charitable activities. The club regularly organizes fundraising events and participates in community outreach programs, reinforcing its role as a positive force in the community. By leveraging the power of golf, Leisure Hour has been able to make a meaningful impact on the lives of many individuals and families.
Today, the club remains dedicated to its founding principles and its membership has grown to include a diverse group of golfers, reflecting the club’s ongoing commitment to breaking down barriers and fostering a welcoming environment for all.
The club’s rich history and ongoing contributions to the golfing community have earned it a revered place in the region, and its legacy is a reminder of the positive impact that the game can have on individuals and the community at large.
