Northwest students receive Evans Scholarships

Sixteen young students from around the region who have spent a portion of the past two years working as a caddie will be attending college in the fall on an Evans Scholarship.

During interviews held this spring, nominees were awarded an Evans Caddie Scholarship, a full tuition and housing college scholarship.

Evans Scholars are caddies who were selected based on four criteria: caddie record, academics, financial need and leadership and character. The scholarship is valued at an estimated $125,000 for four years.

Two of the students who have been awarded the Evans Scholarship are from British Columbia, and caddied at Victoria Golf Club.

Sean Enwright

Sean Enwright and Elizabeth Zielinski will begin university next fall as Evans Scholars, with their awarded schools to be announced this spring.

The Evans Scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate a strong caddie record, excellent academics, financial need, and outstanding character. The Western Golf Association (WGA), headquartered in Glenview, Illinois, oversees the Evans Scholars Program, one of golf’s favorite charities and the nation’s largest scholarship program for caddies.

“Sean and Elizabeth have exemplified the qualities of hard work, integrity, and character that define an Evans Scholar,” said Jenny Dobell, a WGA Director and member at Victoria Golf Club. “Their achievements at our club and in their communities are remarkable, and we are thrilled to celebrate this milestone with them.”

Enwright, who is interested in studying business and economics, is the eldest of five sons and has balanced school, sports, and family responsibilities while caddying. “Caddying has taught me the value of hard work, responsibility and confidence,” he said. “The Evans Scholarship gives me the opportunity to continue my education and pursue my goals.”

Elizabeth Zielinski

Zielinski plans to study graphic design and says caddying has strengthened her work ethic and professionalism. “Caddying has taught me confidence, perseverance and how to connect with people,” she said. “The Evans Scholarship allows me to pursue my dreams while carrying forward the lessons I learned at the club.”

In total, 17 caddies from Victoria Golf Club have earned the Evans Scholarship, with four caddies currently in school.

Currently, a record 1,260 caddies are enrolled at 27 universities across the country as Evans Scholars. More than 12,575 caddies have graduated as Evans Scholars since the Program was founded by famed Chicago amateur golfer Charles “Chick” Evans Jr. in 1930.

Evans Scholars have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 and a 98 percent graduation rate. An estimated 40 percent are first-generation college students, and 96 percent are employed or enrolled in graduate school within six months of graduating.

Funds for the Evans Scholarship come mostly from contributions by more than 43,500 supporters across the country, who are members of the Evans Scholars Par Club program. Evans Scholars Alumni donate more than $15 million annually, and all proceeds from the BMW Championship, the penultimate PGA TOUR Playoff event in the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup competition, benefit the Evans Scholars Foundation. In 2026, the BMW Championship will be held at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Mo., from Aug. 18-23.
