Quarterfinals Set in 40th PNGA Men’s Master-40
The Round of 32 and Round of 16 in the 40th Pacific Northwest Men’s Master-40 Amateur Championship took place today at Meadow Springs Country Club in Richland, Wash.
Medalist and PNGA Hall of Fame inductee Tom Brandes of Bellevue, Wash. continued his run through the championship with victories over 2014 PNGA Men’s Mid-Amateur champion Jeff Ward of Bend, Ore. this morning and Stephen Hartnett of Boise, Idaho this afternoon.
No. 2 seed and two-time champion Erik Hanson of Kirkland, Wash. also advanced to tomorrow’s quarterfinals with with a whopping 8 & 7 win over Spokane, Wash.’s Bret Bloom, and over Keith Crimp of Ellensburg, Wash. in the Round of 16.
Defending Master-40 champion Nate Hair of Edwall, Wash. won in the Round of 32 in dramatic fashion on the 19th hole over Mill Creek, Wash.’s Paul Houvener. Hair hit his tee shot on the first extra hole into the water hazard, but hit his next shot on the 553-yard par-5 to just four feet, and made the birdie, while Houvener made par. Hair went on to win again in the afternoon to advance to the quarterfinals tomorrow, and will face Brandes at 7:30 a.m.
Also joining the quarterfinals are Jim Ostrander of Kennewick, Wash., Scott Johnson of Richland, Wash., Chris Sonnichsen of Woodburn, Ore., Steve Rude of Graham, Wash., and Dick Cartmell, of Richland, Wash.
