Round Two Recap: PNGA Senior & Super Senior Men’s Amateur Championship

The warm and windy weather from round one was long gone as players faced a rainy and cool second round at the 52nd Pacific Northwest Senior Men’s Amateur Championship and 7th Super Senior Amateur Championship. Off and on showers throughout the day made for difficult conditions and players struggled to break par at the demanding Big Sky Golf Club.

First round co-leader, Tom Brandes, fought his way back from 3-over on the day by making birdies on three of his final six holes. Brandes found a lateral water hazard on the twelfth hole and instead of letting his round slip away, he got up and down to save a bogey and used that momentum to finish strong and get back to even par. He remains 2-under for the Championship and holds a one shot lead over Gene Cook heading in to the final round. Cook, who was tied for the lead with Brandes after round one, got himself to 3-under with a 35 on the front but he struggled a bit on the back and wound up with a 1-over par, 73 on the day. It was a much different round today for Cook as he made thirteen pars compared to just six in round one. They will be joined tomorrow in the final group by Big Sky Golf Club member Lance Lundy who sits three shots back at 1-over par. Lundy had a great round going at 2-under par as he made his approach to the twelfth green but was derailed when his shot found the hazard. He would go on to make double there and add bogeys on fourteen and seventeen before birdieing the last to finish at 1-over on the day as well as total for the Championship. The final group tees off at 12:10 p.m. tomorrow.

Still within striking distance of Brandes is Norm Bradley, currently in fourth place at 2-over par, Jim Shaw in fifth at 3-over and Tom Prevost who is in sixth at 4-over. The three will be paired together tomorrow in the 12:00 p.m. starting time.

In the Super Senior Championship, Gudmund Lindbjerg followed up a 4-under, 32 on the front nine in round one with a 2-under, 34 on the front nine today. Unlike yesterday however, Gudmund was able to stay in red figures at the end of the day despite a triple bogey on the twelfth. He followed up his one mistake with birdies at thirteen and fourteen and finished with one of the few under par rounds of the day, a 1-under, 71. He currently sits atop the leaderboard, one stroke better than Rick Weihe and Tom Kubisa at even par. Kubisa matched Lindbjerg with 71 of his own that included three birdies and two bogeys. Weihe, who led after round one at 3-under par, managed to avoid making big numbers but struggled to make birdies. His lone birdie on the day came at the seventeenth and finished with a 3-over par, 75 on the day. The three will be paired together at 9:10 a.m. tomorrow.
