Stouffer maintains PNGA Senior Women’s Amateur lead; Fisher, Gibbons tied in Super Senior

Squamish Valley Golf Club

Squamish, B.C. – Shelly Stouffer of Nanoose Bay, BC shot a 1-over par 73 to maintain the lead of the 38th Pacific Northwest Senior Women’s Amateur Championship, while Marcia Fisher of Molalla, Ore. and Penny Gibbons of Vancouver, Wash. shot rounds of 78 and 77, respectively, to share the 13th Pacific Northwest Super Senior Women’s Amateur lead. Both championships are being held this week, September 2-4, at Squamish Valley Golf Club in Squamish, B.C.

This year marks the first time Squamish Valley is hosting either championship.

With two 18-hole rounds of stroke play complete in both championships, one more will follow for each. A hole-by-hole playoff would determine each respective champion if necessary.

Stouffer’s round was somewhat straightforward, but an avoidance of danger allowed her to wind up with a seven-shot lead. She recorded pars on every hole until a bogey on the 18th left her with a 73, one higher than yesterday but still the lowest of any player by four shots. Stouffer is 1-over par for the championship.

Stouffer won the 2022 and 2023 PNGA Senior Women’s Championships, as well as the previous six BC Women’s Senior Amateur titles. She is a member of the PNGA Hall of Fame.

Sandra Turbide of Maple Ridge, BC — a two-time PNGA Women’s Mid-Amateur champ — is currently second, seven shots back of Stouffer at 8-over.

In the Super Senior, Fisher’s round of 78 included a birdie on her seventh hole. She is in search of her third Super Senior title, having previously won the 2021 and 2022 Championships. She also won the PNGA Women’s Amateur in 1989 and 1991 and, like Stouffer, is a PNGA Hall-of-Famer.

As for Gibbons, her second-round 77 was the lowest of the super senior championship, and included a birdie on her fourth hole. Gibbons is returning this year to defend her 2024 PNGA Super Senior title.

These championships are two of 11 major, regional, amateur championships for men, women, juniors and senior conducted annually by the PNGA throughout the Northwest.
