Walmart Supports Character Education in Schools
Walmart has donated $12,500 this year to support The First Tee’s character education programs in King County schools. Store manager Jeremy Smith presented a check to representatives from The First Tee of Greater Seattle during the unveiling of the company’s recently expanded Renton (Wash.) store.
The retailer’s support will propel the expansion of The First Tee of Greater Seattle’s National School Program in South King County. During the past five years, Walmart has contributed $53,500 to programs of The First Tee of Greater Seattle.
The First Tee of Greater Seattle, a nonprofit youth development organization, supports schools through its National School Program (NSP). Through that program, elementary schools receive teacher training, age-appropriate equipment, and curriculum to promote core values and healthy habits through the unique avenue of golf.
Currently, The First Tee’s National School Program reaches more than 67,000 students annually at 152 public and parochial schools throughout Auburn, Issaquah, Kent, Seattle, and Shoreline. During physical education classes students are introduced to the lifelong sport while learning basic golf motor skills and the inherent values of the game.
Students involved in the National School Program will have the opportunity to continue learning the game of golf and the life-enhancing values associated with it by enrolling in year-round programs offered by The First Tee of Greater Seattle at local golf courses.
The First Tee of Greater Seattle provides affordable golf and educational life skills programming for young people ages 8-18 at four local golf facilities:
- Jefferson Park Golf Course in Beacon Hill
- Jackson Park Golf Course in North Seattle
- Crossroads Par-3 Golf Course in Bellevue
- Riverbend Golf Complex in Kent
Through golf, its activities promote character education, core values and healthy choices for young people of all backgrounds. More information on its program offerings are online at www.TheFirstTeeSeattle.org.
