2014 Master-40 Championship – Day One Recap
The Men’s Master-40 Championship began today at the Prospector Course at Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum, Washington. The 2007 and 2010 champion, Erik Hanson of Kirkland, Wash., leads the field of 64 players after shooting a 2-under par 70. Hanson goes into the second day of stroke play with a two stroke lead and is the only player that shot under par.
Roger Thorn of Redmond, Wash. was able to avoid shooting over par with a birdie on the last hole of the day. Thorn claimed sole possession of second place with his even par 72.
Though the sun was out all day, the wind speed picked up significantly during the afternoon causing many players to struggle on day one.
Tomorrow is last day of stroke play qualifying, as the championship will then become a match play competition. The lowest 32 scores will be put into the Championship Flight and the champion will be decided after three days of match play.
