2014 PNGA Men’s Amateur Championship – Round of 32 Recap

The 113th Pacific Northwest Men’s Amateur Championship Round of 32 commenced this morning, July 9th at Palouse Ridge Golf Club at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. A full field of 168 contestants participated in 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying held over July, 6th, and July 7th. The field was cut to a 64 player match play bracket, from July 8th, to July 11th, with the final match played over 36 holes.

The Round of 32 matches teed off from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m., with the winner of each match continuing on to play in the afternoon matches in the Round of 16. Round of 16 matches will begin at 12:30 p.m. and run to 1:26 p.m.

The Palouse Ridge Golf Club set-up was altered for the two rounds on Wednesday. The par-4 15th hole became a 300-yard par 3, and the par-4 17th, was played as a 527-yard par 5. The back nine consisted of four par 3’s, and three par 5’s. The par 70 course played to a total distance of 7,002 yards.

Tye Gabriel of Portland, Ore., the last man in and No. 64 seed continued his run through the Championship when he beat Andrew Whalen of Ephrata, Wash. 1 up in the Round of 32. Gabriel qualified for the match play in a four-hole playoff, and then defeated No. 1 seed and Medalist Honoree Dale Brandt-Richards of Sydney, Australia.

Brothers Cole and Clayton Madey of West Linn, Ore. both advanced through the Round of 32 and will face-off in a Round of 16 afternoon match at 12:46 p.m. Cole defeated Spencer Weiss of Sammamish, Wash., while brother Clayton won 6 and 5 over Richland, Wash. native Scott Kim.

Charles Kern of Mercer Island, Wash. and Tom Swanson of Missoula, Mont. faced off in the Round of 32 in a match that looked to be firmly in the hands of Swanson, who was 4 up through 13 holes. However, Kern turned things around, and made birdies on holes 14, 15, and 18 to force a playoff. He drove the green on the 20th hole (Hole No. 2) and made birdie to complete the comeback, and advance to the afternoon matches.

The Quarterfinal and Semifinal Rounds will be played tomorrow, Thursday July 10th, 2014.
