Bar Run Recognized by Pacific Northwest Golfer Magazine

Par-5 14th selected as one of the ‘Great Holes of the Northwest’

Par-5 14th hole at Bar Run Golf & RV Resort

In the June 2024 issue of Pacific Northwest Golfer magazine, the par-5 14th hole at Bar Run Golf & RV Resort in Roseburg, Ore. is recognized as one of the “Great Holes of the Northwest,” one of just four holes selected each year by the Northwest’s largest and longest-running golf publication.

On the tee shot of this sweeping par-5, which can be stretched to 600 yards from the black tees, the play is to the left side, and conceding that this is a three-shot hole. Or, be aggressive and choose a straighter line along the water line. There are some fescue patches scattered in the fairway, but usually worth the risk.

For the second shot, either lay up short and keep to the left, or swing away. A large bunker protects the right side of the green, just beyond the water, which provides some solace as a soft landing place to catch an errant shot from bounding into the water. But the bailout area is still to the left, where a small bunker just short of the green sits amidst the scattered rough.

Designed by Portland native Dan Hixson, Bar Run opened its first nine holes in July 2021, with the full course opening in July 2022. The course is spread out along the flood plain of the South Umpqua River, and is a reclamation project for a mining operation, covering the old Umpqua Sand & Gravel land.

The views on the course take in the South Umpqua River, the nearby Callahan Mountains, and dramatic scenes incorporating the abundance of ponds throughout the property. Bar Run received the “Best Public Courses – Bronze Medal” for Best New Courses in 2022.
