In this morning’s quarterfinal round of the 115th Pacific Northwest Men’s Amateur Championship, being held at Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla, Wash., Andrew Whalen of Ephrata, Wash. was able to advance to the semifinals, while his younger brother Aaron fell.
Andrew, who earlier this year had qualified for and played in the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball, had pulled an upset in yesterday’s Round of 16 by knocking off No. 1 seed James Grierson of Australia, 5 and 4. This morning, he dispatched Ryan Wallen of Blaine, Wash. by the same result, 5 and 4.
Aaron, a sophomore at Washington State University, fell in this morning’s quarterfinal match to Carl Yuan, the sophomore from the University of Washington.
Connor Barr of Beaverton, Ore., who last month had won the Oregon Amateur, fell in the quarterfinal matches to Drew McCullough of Richland, Wash. McCullough won the Seattle Amateur last month, and will be a junior at the University of Wyoming in the fall.
