Entering the match play bracket as the No. 10 seed after the stroke-play qualifying rounds, Corkill’s path to victory included a 2 & 1 win in the round of 32, a 3 & 2 win in the round of 16, a 1 up win in the quarterfinals, and a 21-hole victory in the semifinals.
In today’s final, both players started strong, matching each other’s scores early on. Stephens briefly took a 1-up lead on the fifth hole, but Corkill responded by winning the sixth and eighth holes to take a 1-up lead into the back nine.
Corkill then extended his lead by winning the 10th and 11th holes to go 3-up. Although Stephens won the 12th hole to narrow the gap, Corkill regained his 3-up advantage by winning the 14th hole and ultimately closed out the match on the par-3 16th hole for a 3 & 2 victory.
This marks Corkill’s first PNGA title. Earlier this year, he won the 2024 Heron Lakes Men’s Club Championship (Portland) and finished T4 at the Golfweek PNW Senior Championship.
Stephens, who entered match play as the No. 4 seed, has been a longtime competitor in tournaments and championships throughout the region.
The Pacific Northwest Men’s Master-40 Amateur is one of 11 major regional amateur championships for men, women, juniors, and seniors conducted annually by the PNGA throughout the Northwest.
