Round one recap: Senior & Super Senior Men’s and Women’s Amateur Championships

The opening rounds of the Pacific Northwest Senior & Super Senior Men’s Amateur Championships were conducted today at Wine Valley Golf Club in Walla Walla, Wash.

After day one Michael Jackson of Redmond, Ore. leads the Senior Men, Denny Taylor of Gladstone, Ore. leads the Super Senior Men, Rosie Cook of Bend, Ore. and Michelle Hood of Sammamish, Wash. are tied atop the Senior Women’s and Marcia Fisher of Molalla, Ore. leads the Super Senior Women.

In the Senior Men’s Championship, Jackson fired an opening round 4-under 68 to steer two shots clear of the nearest competitor, Erik Hanson of Kirkland, Wash. Jackson finished the round with six birdies against bogeys.

Denny Taylor of Gladstone, Ore. opened with a round of 2-under 70 to take the first-round lead in the Super Senior Men’s Championship. He enters the second round one shot ahead of Dave Runberg of Centennial, Colo. and David Hunter of Federal Way, Wash.

In the Senior Women’s Championship, Cook and Hood each shot rounds of even-par 72 to share a piece of the lead heading into the second round. Both players are three shots clear of second place.

Pacific Northwest Golf Hall of Famer Marcia Fisher opened the Super Senior Women’s Championship with a round of 1-under 71 to take a commanding lead on the field. Fisher will enter the second round with an eight shot lead on a host of challengers Marcy Holt of Spokane, Wash., Sue Ursino of Sammamish, Wash., and Karen Madison of Spokane Valley, Wash.

The four championships are being held concurrently, and are conducted by the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA). The Senior Men’s Amateur includes men 55 years of age or older while the Super Senior Men’s Amateur includes men age 65 years or older. The Senior Women’s includes women 50 years or older, and the Super Senior Women’s includes women 65 and older.

The Senior and Super Senior Men’s and Women’s amateur championships are four of 11 major, regional, amateur championships for men, women, juniors, and seniors conducted annually by the PNGA throughout the Northwest. View full championship schedule.
