Burkey and Norman lead PNGA Women’s Senior Team; Crowded leaderboard at Super Senior

Defending champions Ginny Burkey and Leilani Norman of Eugene, Ore. grabbed a slim lead after the opening round of the 36th Pacific Northwest Women’s Senior Team Championship; while Mary O’Donnell of Bellevue, Wash. and Carol Dick of Lakewood, Wash. are tied with Mary Ryan of Renton, Wash. and Sun Douthit of Steilacoom, Wash. atop the 3rd Women’s Super Senior Team Championship.

Both championships are being held concurrently at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton Wash, and are being conducted by the PNGA.

Round one of both championships took place on the Gold Mountain Cascade Course.

The duo of Burkey and Norman opened their title defense with a 3-under par 69 in the Four-Ball stroke play (Best-Ball) format, good for a one-shot lead over Joyce Martin of Fircrest, Wash. and Alisa Wilson of Tacoma, Wash.

Burkey has won this championship seven times with three different playing partners. Norman was named the 2015 PNGA Senior Women’s Player of the Year.

Five teams sit within three shots of the lead heading into tomorrow’s second round, which will be played in the Chapman format on the Olympic Course.

Playing in the Four-Ball stroke play (Best-Ball) format, the teams of Ryan and Douthit and Dick and O’Donnell each shot a 2-over 74 to tie for the lead. Linda Pearson of Seattle, Wash. and Sandra Oberg of Bow, Wash. sit one off the lead at 3-over.

Ryan and Douthit are looking for their third consecutive Super Senior Team title, and are the only team to have won this championship after claiming a one-shot victory over O’Donnell and Dick last year.

Both championships consist of two-person teams, and will be contested over 54 holes. The first and third round of each championship will be Four-Ball stroke play, while the second round for each championship will be in the Chapman format. Entrants in the Senior championships must be 50 years of age or older prior to start of play in the first round, and 65 years of age for the Super Senior championships.
