Wicks making strong bid to repeat at PNGA Senior Women’s Amateur; Horwood and Ursino tied in Super Senior

Anita Wicks of Roseburg, Ore. shot 2-over 75 on the par-73 Overlake Golf and Country Club in Medina, Wash. to take the first-round lead in the 31st Pacific Northwest Senior Women’s Amateur; while Holly Horwood of Vancouver, B.C. and Sue Ursino of Sammamish, Wash. each shot 7-over to share the first-round lead in the 6th Super Senior Women’s Amateur.

Overlake Golf and Country Club, Hole #9.

Wicks won this championship last year, and is on the threshold of defending her title, holding a narrow 1-shot lead over four strong competitors, which include Alison Murdoch of Victoria, B.C., who has won this title twice (2005, 2011) and was inducted into the Pacific Northwest Golf Hall of Fame in 2013; Leslie Folsom of Tukwila, Wash., who last week competed in her ninth consecutive USGA Women’s State Team Championship; Gretchen Klein of Hoquiam, Wash., who earlier this year won the Washington State Senior Women’s Champion of Champions; and Ginny Burkey of Eugene, Ore., who last month won her seventh title in the PNGA Women’s Senior Team.

There are 12 players within eight shots of Wicks.

In the Super Senior Amateur, neither Horwood nor Ursino are strangers to the winner’s circle. Ursino is a 3-time champion of the Washington State Senior Women’s Amateur (2003, 2004, 2005), while Horwood won the Pacific Northwest Senior Women’s Amateur in 2012 before starting to compete in the Super Senior.

Both championships are contested over 36 holes of stroke play and are being held concurrently. They are conducted by the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA).
